Upper Blue Lake zone on Baranof Island in Unit 4 to close to the harvest of mountain goats

SITKA, Alaska - The Sitka District Ranger, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the Upper Blue Lake zone to the harvest of mountain goats. The closure will be effective at 11:59 p.m., Thursday October 12, 2017 and continue through the remainder of the 2017 season which ends December 31. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has issued a concurrent closure in the same zone.

Entries sought for Subsistence Student Art Contest

The Federal Subsistence Management Program is sponsoring its annual art contest for all students in Alaska grades K-12. Deadline for submission is February 15, 2018. This year, entries may focus on either subsistence wildlife or fish, and two winners will be selected.

2017 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 62 Yukon River District 6 Subsistence and Personal Use Fishing

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaFall Season Emergency Order # 54The 2017 fall chum salmon total run size projection, based on inseason assessment, is 2.5 million fish. This level of abundance should be sufficient to provide for escapement, an above average subsistence harvest, and a surplus available for commercial and personal use purposes. Therefore, the department is relaxing the subsistence and personal use fishing schedule to 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for the remainder of the fall season.

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaFall Season Emergency Order # 52​District 6 Commercial Schedule:The previously announced commercial salmon fishing period in District 6 that was scheduled to close at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 27 will now remain open until 11:59 p.m., Saturday, September 30. Commercial fishermen may use 6-inch or smaller mesh size set gillnets or fish wheels.
