2018 Yukon River Salmon Fishery News Release # 20 - Subdistricts 4-B and 4-C Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon Area

The Chinook abundance estimates are well below average at the Pilot Station sonar to date. This news release announces the next three subsistence fishing periods in Subdistricts 4-B and 4-C. During one opening, gear will be restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets. The Wednesday, June 27 period is being cancelled to allow fish passage to the upper river. These actions are intended to limit the harvest on the first pulse of Chinook salmon which should begin arriving in this area around June 24. The first large group of summer chum salmon should be arriving in Subdistricts 4-B and 4-C around July 1.

Subsistence Management Actions:

Subdistricts 4-B and 4-C (including the communities of Galena and Ruby):

Subsistence fishing is open as previously announced from 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 21 with 7.5-inch or smaller mesh gillnets and fish wheels.

Fishing will open for the following 24-hour periods:

7.5-inch or smaller mesh gillnets: 6 p.m. Sunday, June 24 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 25

6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets: 6 p.m. Sunday, July 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, July 2

During these openings, fishermen may use set gillnets, drift gillnets, and fishwheels.

Subsistence salmon fishing is closed between the 24-hour fishing periods. During subsistence salmon fishing closures, fishing for non-salmon species is allowed. However, only gillnets with 4-inch or smaller mesh may be used.
