KETCHIKAN, Alaska – Ketchikan-Misty Fiords District Ranger Jeff DeFreest, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the Federal public waters that flow into District 1 to the taking of eulachon from 12:01 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2017 until 11:59 p.m., May 4, 2017 due to anticipated low eulachon returns.

A public hearing is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m., February 24, 2017, at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Soldotna to hear public testimony about a Fisheries Temporary Special Action Request received by the Federal Subsistence Board. Fisheries Special Action Request FSA17-01, submitted jointly by the Ninilchik Traditional Council and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, requests several modifications to Federal subsistence regulations to allow for implementation of the Kenai River community gillnet fishery for residents of Ninilchik during 2017.

The 10 Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils will meet early February through mid-March to develop proposals to change Federal subsistence hunting and trapping regulations for the 2018-2020 regulatory years as well as other issues affecting subsistence in their regions.
