OIA Funds WICHE Membership Fees for Insular Areas (Revised)

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs announced a payment of $174,900 in Technical Assistance Program (TAP) fiscal year 2022 grant funding to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) for membership fees for the benefit of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.

Continuing Compact Negotiations Between the United States and the Federated States of Micronesia in San Francisco

A United States Government team led by Special Presidential Envoy for Compact Negotiations (SPECN) Ambassador Joseph Yun met in San Francisco this week with a team from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) led by Chief Negotiator Leo A. Falcam, Jr., to continue negotiations on economic assistance, federal programs, and other matters related to the Compact of Free Association, as amended, and subsidiary agreements between the United States and the FSM.

OIA Announces Announces $3,001,886 in Grants to Guam for Fiscal Year 2022

The U.S. The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs has announced $3,001,886 in Technical Assistance Program (TAP) and Maintenance Assistance Program (MAP) grant funding to the Government of Guam for fiscal year 2022. The funding will support various government needs that include grants management training, streamlining business processes across government agencies, improving public safety surveillance, upgrading IT infrastructure for better public access, including equipment, and critical support for the port and the VA cemetery. Funds will also aid in the development of a local marine science program at the University of Guam and assist vulnerable Micronesian communities on Guam.

OIA Provides $431,805 to Support Air Transportation Services in the Western Pacific

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) has announced $431,805 in fiscal year 2022 Technical Assistance Program funding to maintain and update small aircraft engine avionics and engines used for air transportation services between Guam, the Republic of Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia, especially to the smaller islands where no regular air or sea transportation is available. The funding will also purchase spare parts and equipment for emergency patient transport.

OIA Announces Funding Support for 9th Circuit Judicial Training Program for Pacific Insular Areas

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs has approved its annual agreement with the Ninth Judicial Circuit to provide legal training and oversight responsibilities for the judiciaries in American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Republic of Palau. OIA is providing $428,967 in fiscal year (FY) 2022 Technical Assistance Program (TAP) funds to continue this judicial program. Compact of Free Association grant funding in the amount of $377,000 in FY 2022 provides the same judicial training in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

OIA Supports Insular Area Students Through Close-Up and Junior State Foundation

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs has announced $1,499,430 in fiscal year 2022 Technical Assistance Program grant funding to two civic engagement and education programs for insular areas students. One million dollars has been provided to the Close-Up Foundation and $499,430 has been provided to the Junior State Foundation.

OIA Announces $35 Million in Compact Impact Funds for FY 2022

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs has announced the availability of $35 million in fiscal year (FY) 2022 Compact Impact funding to be provided to Hawai’i, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. The total amount includes $30 million in mandatory funding made available under U.S. Public Law 108-188 and an additional $5 million in discretionary funding made available under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022 (Public Law 117-103).
