Executive Orders & Public Laws

The following executive orders and public laws provide authorities for and guide the work of the Office of Insular Affairs and inform the work of the Secretary of the Interior in carrying out responsibilities for the Insular Areas. The Insular Areas are comprised of the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and the freely associated states which are the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.

U.S. Virgin Islands – Executive Order 7968, December 5, 1938 – Signed by President Harry S. Truman, established the Virgin Islands Corporation to promote economic development and improve living conditions in the U.S. Virgin Islands
Executive Order 6726 – Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, established the Division of Territories and Island Possessions in the U.S. Department of the Interior on May 29, 1934. This act transferred responsibilities for territories from the Bureau of Insular Affairs, Department of War to Interior.
