OIA Supports Insular Area Students Through Close-Up and Junior State Foundation

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs has announced $1,499,430 in fiscal year 2022 Technical Assistance Program grant funding to two civic engagement and education programs for insular areas students. One million dollars has been provided to the Close-Up Foundation and $499,430 has been provided to the Junior State Foundation.

OIA Announces $35 Million in Compact Impact Funds for FY 2022

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs has announced the availability of $35 million in fiscal year (FY) 2022 Compact Impact funding to be provided to Hawai’i, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. The total amount includes $30 million in mandatory funding made available under U.S. Public Law 108-188 and an additional $5 million in discretionary funding made available under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022 (Public Law 117-103).

OIA Announces $700,000 in FY 2022 Funds for Prior Service Trust Fund Program

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs announces $700,000 in fiscal year 2022 funding for the Prior Service Trust Fund Administration, which distributes benefits to approximately 700 former employees of the post-World War II, U.S. administered, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) in the Western Pacific.

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs announced a payment of $174,900 in Technical Assistance Program (TAP) fiscal year 2022 grant funding to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) for membership fees for the benefit of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.

Interior Deputy Assistant Secretary Keone Nakoa Promotes Traditional, Community-Led Initiatives for Conservation at Our Ocean Conference in Palau

WASHINGTON – The United States (U.S.) Department of the Interior’s Deputy Assistant Secretary Keone Nakoa recently concluded a trip to the Republic of Palau where he participated in the seventh Our Ocean Conference, held from April 13 to 14, 2022. Themed “Our Ocean, Our People, Our Prosperity”, the Conference featured numerous panels where DAS Nakoa hosted the Marine Protected Areas panel, highlighting the importance of collaborating with traditional and community leaders for the long-term and inter-generational success of natural resource and ocean conservation globally as well as in the Insular Areas.
