2018 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 9 - Fall Update # 1, Yukon Area Salmon Fishery

Districts Affected: Yukon AreaThe 2018 fall chum salmon preseason run projection is for a run size of 700,000 to 900,000 fish. This level of abundance is anticipated to be sufficient to meet escapement and subsistence needs and provide a surplus for commercial and personal use purposes. The estimated reconstructed fall chum salmon run size through July 22 (based on the mainstem sonar near Pilot Station and the downstream harvest) is estimated to be 118,000 fish, which is above the historical median of 74,000 fish for that date. The front of the fall season chum salmon run that entered the Yukon River on July 19 is expected to be near Kaltag on July 31, Galena around August 2, and Tanana/Huslia around August 7, Rampart around August 9 and the Canadian border around August 27.

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon AreaThe 2018 fall chum salmon preseason run projection is for a run size of 700,000 to 900,000 fish. This level of abundance is anticipated to be sufficient to meet escapement and subsistence needs and provide a surplus for commercial and personal use purposes. A mixture of both summer chum and fall chum salmon are currently entering the Yukon River. Commercial fishing in the lower river at this time will likely harvest a mixture of both stocks.

2018 Yukon River Summer Salmon Fishery News Release # 47 - Subdistrict 4-A Commercial Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaAt this time, the majority of the Chinook salmon run has passed through Subdistrict 4-A, so the requirement to man commercial fish wheels is being removed because very few Chinook salmon would be encountered at this late date. Commercial fishing will remain open in Subdistrict 4-A to target summer chum salmon. These commercial fishing periods do not affect current subsistence management actions and fishing schedules.

Federal Subsistence Board opens a limited caribou hunt to False Pass residents on Unimak Island

The Federal Subsistence Board (Board) has approved Temporary Special Action WSA18-01, with modification, to allow the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge Manager to issue Federal registration permits for a harvest of up to 3 bull caribou from the Unimak Caribou Herd (UCH) and set dates for a may be announced season between August 15 and October 15, 2018 for residents of False Pass only.

2018 Yukon River Salmon Fishery News Release # 46 - Subdistricts 5-A, 5-B, and 5-C Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaThe 2018 Chinook salmon run is returning near the lower end of the preseason projection and managers are predicting that a run of this size, in combination with the restrictions already implemented, will be adequate to meet escapement goals and Canadian border passage and harvest share objectives. At this time, it is warranted to relax subsistence salmon restrictions in the later portion of the run. The fourth pulse of Chinook salmon should begin arriving in Subdistrict 5-A by July 17.
