2018 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 29 - Fall Update # 4, Yukon Area Salmon Fishery

Districts Affected: Yukon AreaThe 2018 fall chum salmon inseason run projection is 700,000 to 900,000 fish. Inseason run assessment indicates that the 2018 fall chum salmon run is tracking within the preseason projection range. The estimated fall chum salmon run size as of August 12 (based on the mainstem sonar near Pilot Station and the downstream harvest) is 463,000 fish, which is above the historical median of 395,000 fish for this date. The average mid-point of the fall chum salmon run is August 12 at Pilot Station.

Fall chum salmon passage by the mainstem sonar near Pilot Station through August 10 is 293,100 fish, which is slightly below the 325,200 fish median for that date. Although passage is slightly below median, the 2018 fall chum salmon run is tracking within the preseason projection range.

Federal Subsistence Board holds summer work session

The Federal Subsistence Board (Board) held a work session on August 7, 2018. During the session, the Board approved, with minor modifications, Regional Advisory Council Annual Report Replies, and accepted revisions to a wildlife delegation of authority letter, giving the in-season manager in Unit 2 authority to close, reopen, or adjust the Federal hunting and trapping season for wolves. The Board heard presentations on the status of the Fisheries Resource Monitoring Program proposal process and pending Federal subsistence regulations.

Cow Moose Harvest Quota Established for Unit 15C

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Manager, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, has established a harvest quota of eight (8) cow moose for Federal public lands within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Game Management Unit 15C. The quota is effective for the 2018 Federal subsistence moose season, which runs August 10-September 20, by Federal registration permit only. The season will be closed to the harvest of cow moose once the quota is met. The harvest of spike-fork bull moose or bull moose with 50-inch antlers, or with 3 or more brow tines on either antler, will still be allowed.
