The purpose of the weekly fisheries update is to provide the reader with an overall summary of the status of subsistence related fisheries throughout the state of Alaska.  The target audience is the Federal Subsistence Board and its Staff Committee.  The report was compiled with the assistance of the Federal in-season managers and OSM staff that provided weekly updated information by the close of business on Friday of the reporting week.  My goal is to have the report sent by the close of business the following Monday.  Web links have been included to provide additional information.  You may obtain additional information on a fishery of particular interest by contacting the in-season manager, provided contacts, follow the provided web links, or contact me.

Federal Waters of District 3 of the Yukon River Closed to Subsistence Salmon Fishing

The Federal In-season Manager, pursuant to delegated authority from the Federal Subsistence Board under Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA Title VIII section 816), has issued an emergency special action (2-KS-02-22) closing Federal public waters (except for the Innoko River) of District 3, (which includes the communities of Russian Mission and Holy Cross and of the Yukon River to the harvest of Chinook and summer Chum salmon, effective 8 pm, Tuesday, June 7 until August 1.

Federal Waters of the Coastal District and Districts 1&2 of the Yukon River Closed to Subsistence Salmon Fishing

The Federal In-season Manager, pursuant to delegated authority from the Federal Subsistence Board under Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA Title VIII section 816), has issued an emergency special action (2-KS-01-22) closing Federal public waters of the Coastal District, (which includes the communities of Scammon Bay, Hooper Bay, and Chevak, as well as the Black River), and District 1, (which includes the communities of Emmonak, Nunam Iqua, Alakanuk, and Kotlik) of the Yukon River to the harvest of Chinook and summer Chum salmon, effective 8 pm, Thursday, June 2 until August 1.

This announcement provides a preliminary summary of the 2021 Yukon Area (Figure 1) fall chum and coho salmon run size and escapements. All results are considered preliminary.

This announcement provides a preliminary summary of the 2021 Yukon Area (Figure 1) fall chum and coho salmon run size and escapements. All results are considered preliminary.

2021 Fall Season Outlook

The fall chum salmon run size forecast, using brood year analysis, was for 652,000 fish, with a range of 542,000 to 762,000 fish. A preseason run size projection was made in mid-July using the relationship between historical summer and fall chum salmon run size estimates. Using the estimate of 157,000 summer chum salmon, the preseason projection for a fall chum salmon was a run size of less than 184,000 fish.

The coho salmon outlook for 2021 was for a near average run size of 240,000 fish. The outlook assumed an average survival of fish from the 2017 parent year, however recent trends have been run sizes below average.

Federal Closure to the Harvest of Chinook Salmon in Federal Public Waters of the Chignik River has been Extended Until 11:59 pm Tuesday August 31, 2021

08/09/2021

The Federal In-season Manager, pursuant to delegated authority from the Federal Subsistence Board and Section 816 of Title VIII of ANILCA, issued an Emergency Special Action (8-KS-01- 21) to close fishing for Chinook salmon by all users, effective 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2021 until 11:59 pm Monday August 9. Effective immediately, Emergency Special action 8-KS- 01-21 will be extended until 11:59 pm Tuesday August 31 due to continued poor escapement of Chinook Salmon into the Chignik River. This extension of the Emergency Special Action is necessary to ensure the continued viability of the Chignik River Chinook Salmon population. This Emergency Special Action prohibits all fishing for Chinook Salmon, and they may not be retained or possessed. Chinook Salmon incidentally caught while fishing for other species may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately.
