WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of the Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, Tony Babauta, has awarded $475,339 to the U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (VIWAPA) through the Office of Insular Affairs’ (OIA) Water and Wastewater Program. This grant provides funding to support VIWAPA project implementation proposals for the Anna’s Retreat Water Project in St. Thomas.

Funding will support the installation of potable water distribution pipelines, service connections and fire hydrants that service the Anna’s Retreat Heights area. The proposed distribution system is expected to extend from Old Tutu North through the residential community to Route 4.

“OIA is pleased to be supporting VIWAPA’s efforts to increase community access to potable water systems. Increasing access to sanitation and sustainable drinking-water systems brings large aggregate benefits that improve not only individual health but also the economic development outcomes of a community,” said Babauta.

The proposed project will assist VIWAPA in increasing their percentage of residential accounts connected to St. Thomas’ East End water system by 55 percent.
