Departments of the Interior and Commerce to Present CNMI GDP Data

Washington, D.C. – The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) and the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), interagency economic team will be arriving in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) to release a detailed report on the island’s gross domestic product (GDP) data.  The OIA will be sending Dr. Wali M. Osman and the BEA team will consist of Dr. Brian Moyer, Acting Deputy Director, Ms. Nicole Mayerhauser, Division Chief, and Ms. Aya Hamano, Project Manager.

Under a technical assistance agreement between OIA and BEA, the BEA commenced the first ever set of GDP estimates for the four territories of American Samoa, the CNMI, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands at the beginning of 2009.  Traveling to all four territories and consulting with local government and business leaders and other data sources, the economic team put together estimates of GDP for the years 2002-2007 for each of the four territories that were released in a joint DOI-DOC press conference in Washington, DC, on May 5, 2010.  The BEA estimated territorial GDP with the same methodology it utilizes in determining mainland U.S. GDP.
