Micronesia Region Loses First Female Casualty In Operation Iraqi Freedom

 – As reported by the Pentagon, a 19-year-old soldier from the Hawaii National Guard was fatally wounded on Thursday, February 19, in a noncombat-related incident in Kuwait.  Specialist Cwislyn K. Walter, born in Chuuk (Micronesia) and raised on Guam, was assigned to the 29th Special Troops Battalion, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Hawaii National Guard.

According to the media, Specialist Walter had just recently naturalized as a U.S. citizen before deployment to the Middle East. The Walter family had no comment on the accident and said they were proud of their daughter's service to her country.  Cwislyn Walter joined the Hawaii National Guard in April 2007. 
 
Two 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team Soldiers pay their final respects to Spc. Cwislyn K. Walter by saluting one last time. Walter, 19, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident in Kuwait, on Feb. 19.

Specialist Walter is the first female casualty and the 33rd from the Micronesia region to have died since the beginning of the War on Terror.  

The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs remembers and honors the men and women of the insular areas who offer up the ultimate sacrifice in the War on Terror. The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs also recognizes all who have served and currently serve in the United States Armed Forces.
