Washington, D.C. - The Department of the Interior's Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Tony Babauta today signed a $306,000 grant award providing support to the Junior Statesmen Foundation. The grant makes available $256,000 to bolster recruitment efforts, and provides full tuition and transportation scholarships for 32 participating insular area high school students with a vested interest in the American legal system and government.

The grant includes additional funding to support the Academic Prep programs at Princeton and Stanford Universities and the JSA Diplomat program.

"Over the last 20 years, the Department of the Interior has partnered with the Junior Statesmen Foundation to enrich the lives of our students in the insular areas. This is a program that rewards academic excellence and fosters a keen understanding and appreciation for government and civic engagement," said Babauta.

"This is a worthwhile investment and I am glad our office can continue lending its support," added Babauta.

The Junior Statesmen Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) educational corporation
which provides administrative and educational support for the Junior State of America. Funding is provided through support from corporations and individuals committed to civic education and leadership training programs.
