 – In a ceremony today at The White House, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Areas Anthony M. Babauta joined President Barack Obama and other administration officials in an Executive Order signing ceremony for The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans.

"This is a joyous occasion for Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans everywhere and especially for me as the first Pacific Islander Assistant Secretary of the Interior in the Nation's history," said Mr. Babauta. "I look forward to serving in the Obama administration to help improve the quality of life and create opportunities for all Asian American and Pacific Islander Americans."

The Executive Order extends an earlier one signed by President Clinton in 1999, establishing the President's Advisory Commission on improving the quality of life of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans through increased participation in Federal programs.  These include federal assistance in health, human services, housing, education, labor, transportation, and economic and community development, areas in which Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans may be underserved.
