Approved Unprepared Landing Areas for Point To Point Operations

The Following Unprepared Landing Areas are OAS approved exceptions to the criteria that define an Unprepared Landing Area in OAS contracts, agreements and for fleet operations. These Landing areas have met specific safety requirements that are listed below under INITIAL IMPLEMENTING INSTRUCTIONS. If a Bureau desires to submit an exception for consideration, it must meet all criteria listed in the initial implementing instructions. If an Unprepared Landing Area is approved for Point to Point Operations, the only reoccurring requirements are the inspection conducted at the beginning of each season, and the 30-day reassessment of the runway condition.

INITIAL IMPLEMENTING INSTRUCTIONS

The following criteria will be used by OAS to evaluate unprepared landing areas submitted by the DOI Bureau Regional Aviation Manager (or equivalent) for a runway to be considered same as Point to Point operations:

  • Defined area of runway (runway perimeter), must land and walk entire runway.
  • Stable surface consisting of packed gravel or other suitable surface (e.g. maintained sod)
  • Submit pictures and written data to include dimensions, surface area, stability and obstructions to OAS Regional office responsible for the area of operations. (must land and walk entire runway).  Request will be submitted through a completed

  • Bureau must have a written procedure to monitor any changes in the runway condition
  • The Bureaus will designate two points of contact that will provide information to vendor pilots on current runway status and conditions prior to take off. These contacts will be posted along with the list of approved runways.

The requesting Bureau will submit their request (completed Landing Site Worksheet) to OAS Technical Services, Attn: Jacob Mitchem (L-48)
