National Park Service Policy & Guidance

You don't have to work for the National Park Service to access the museum collections management guidance in the Museum Handbook or the preservation pointers in the Conserve O Grams series!

NPS Museum Handbook

Although developed for National Park Service staff, the Museum Handbook is a valuable tool for curators and other museum workers across the profession. The NPS Museum Management Program updates and publishes the Museum Handbook.

The handbook is divided into three sections: Museum Collections, Museum Records, and Museum Collections Use.

Conserve O Grams

Since 1993 the National Park Service has published Conserve O Grams - an ongoing series of short, focused leaflets about caring for and conserving museum objects and collections of all kinds. Written to be accessible for all, Conserve O Grams are handy, topical guides for both professionals and family curators. You will find guidance on a wide range of topics from digital collections to the conservation and preservation of objects such as fine arts, furniture, ceramics, glass, leatherwork, books and papers, as well as discussions about new techniques, materials, and technologies. The National Park Service continues to add new topics and revise and update out-of-date issues.
