The U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife regularly partner to complete important fuels reduction projects on Air Force lands. Through prescribed fire or mechanical forest fuel reduction, the FWS provided mission support to 14 USAF installations across the country in 2019. So far, in 2020, the FWS has successfully assisted with several preparedness projects, including a 273-acre prescribed burn on Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, and a 260-acre prescribed burn at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, alongside the National Park Service.

The use of prescribed fire is a valuable tool in preventing catastrophic wildfires and promoting natural ecological processes of fire dependent ecosystems. Prescribed fire is an important management tool utilized to fulfill the mission and goals of Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. It is used to restore and maintain biological integrity of refuge habitats and reducing threats to public health and safety from potential catastrophic wildfires in those communities near the wildland urban interface.

Wildfires and a virus as two forces of nature putting first responders in an impossible situation. But focusing on this stark choice of dueling threats tends to obscure one of humankinds’ greatest gifts: flexibility. Our ability to react and adapt, making small changes to our routines so we bend instead of breaking.

The 2019-2020 season was one of the worst fire seasons on record in Australia. By November, Australia requested international assistance to suppress the thousands of fires on the landscape. Over the course of four months, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided 11 individuals to assist in suppression efforts.
