Washington, D.C. - The Department of the Interior's Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, Tony Babauta, issued the following statement on the passing of former Governor Juan F. Luis and former Lt. Governor and President of the U.S. Virgin Islands Legislature Derek Hodge, Esq.:

"On behalf of Secretary Salazar and the Department of the Interior, it is with great respect and deep sadness that I offer my condolences to the family, friends, and the entire Virgin Islands community on the passing of former Governor Juan F. Luis and former Lt. Governor and President of the Virgin Islands Legislature Derek Hodge, Esq.

Governor Luis was a man who stood out in the community for the sacrifices he was willing to make in order that Virgin Islanders should have a better life.  He did not find comfort in the status quo but had the will to lead the island with vision and foresight.

Lt. Governor Hodge was a strong advocate for a sustainable and self-sufficient community, and he championed the extension of important federal programs and actions to support this vision.   His life in public service has left an indelible mark and helped to ensure the Virgin Islands is an extraordinary place to live, work and  call home.

They were contemporaries who were divided by political affiliation but who were united in pride and hope for the Virgin Islands and its people. I extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Governor Luis and Lt. Governor Hodge," said Babauta.
