Marshall Islands Four-Atoll Health Care Program Receives Continued Support

Washington, D.C. - The Department of the Interior's Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Tony Babauta signed a $246,731 grant award providing support for the Four Atoll Health Care program in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). The grant will provide funding to continue primary health care to members of the Enewetak, Bikini, Rongelap and the Utrik communities.

This funding will provide a full time primary care physician on each of the four Atolls to work in collaboration with a full time island-based health assistant. Through this grant, members of the four atoll communities receive routine and specialty clinic care, including dental, OB/GYN, immunizations, food safety and water treatment, diabetic assessment and cancer screening.  Assistance is also provided for the updating of medical instruments, equipment and supplies.

"Support for the RMI Four Atoll Health Care Program is vital in our efforts to address the healthcare needs of these communities.  It remains essential to provide consistent, effective and quality healthcare as we bolster our attempts to prioritize and implement sustainable prevention programs that serve our most vulnerable populations," said Assistant Secretary Babauta.

The Four Atoll Health Care Program partially addresses the medical needs of those Marshall Island residents injured by the Nuclear Testing Program carried out in the RMI between1946-1958.
