Assistant Secretary Babauta Supports Brown Treesnake Control Program On Guam

Washington, D.C. - Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Areas, Tony Babauta signed a grant in the amount of $230,000 to support the Guam Department of Agriculture's Brown Treesnake (BTS) Research and Control Program through 2010.

The funds will be used by the Department of Agriculture to maintain approximately 700 BTS traps in order to continue its native species recovery efforts. In addition, important public relations activities such as the "Go Native/Ko'ko' for Cocos" campaign will be continued.

"The unintended introduction of the brown treesnake to Guam has had devastating impacts on native species. Since the mid-eighties, a model multiagency effort has worked to develop control strategies, prevent damage to other vulnerable ecosystems and preserve and restore wildlife populations to Guam," said Assistant Secretary Babauta. "This is an important project and I'm glad to continue supporting it," added Babauta.
