System Administration

OCIO provides centrally managed hosting solutions for a variety of DOI Customer applications. Multiple platforms are available geared to meet customers' computing needs. Distributed computing solutions are provided on the following operating system/server platforms:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Enterprise Linux on x86 servers
  • Solaris on x86 or SPARC servers 
  • Windows on x86/x64 servers
  • Virtualization of above operating systems

OCIO is a mature business organization using Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) practices, along with the BMC Remedy Action Request System, to track and manage change management providing quality and timely service delivery to our customers.

Hardware Support and Maintenance

  • Install and set up all server hardware in accordance with industry best practices. 
  • In conjunction with the hardware Operating System (OS) vendors, apply firmware patches to systems in accordance with DOI/OCIO policies and standards. 
  • Repair or replace any hardware component under warranty shown to be detrimental to the continued operations of a system.

Operating System Support and Maintenance

  • In conjunction with the OCIO Information Security and OS Vendors, apply patches to operating systems in accordance with DOI/OCIO policies and standards and assist with customer application testing to ensure continuous operations.

Capacity, Performance, and System Monitoring

  • Monitor key items for all servers on the following platforms: Linux, SUSE, Solaris, and Windows.
  • Processes and log files can be monitored as requested from standard selection or as contracted.
  • Monitor key items for the OCIO Network.

Standard Fault, Configuration, Performance, and Security Management Monitoring

  • Fault detection with notification to operational personnel and incident ticket creation. 
  • Archiving of device configurations insuring security policies are enforced in the configuration.
  • Collection and reporting on performance metrics.
  • Syslog collection, storage (and analysis as contracted). 
  • Device authentication, authorization and accounting.

Change or Modernization of Existing Operating System Platform

  • Assist developing and testing migration methods to newer operating systems (within the same family).
  • Functionality simulation testing for environment capability.
