We are the U.S. Wildland Fire Service Anchored in Excellence.

The vision, the mission statement, the core values all came out of a group of people from across the US Wildland fire service.


Happy to have people from the ground level to the highest level get together and come up with these common standards.


Took a historic moment to bring folks together into the same room at all levels of the organization.


Everything from AGS 4 Apprentice all the way up to the Fire Chief, representing all the different functional areas and aspects of fire.


Four agencies and tribes coming together to build a vision statement and a value statement.


I mean, the commitment to excellence that the mission statement drives us towards is going to make us successful and make our organization be successful and support others.


The core values, the vision and the mission are foundational to the identity of who we are and where we're going.

Mission

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service protects lives and communities; safeguards and restores landscapes; delivers unified national wildfire leadership; strengthens partnerships and tribal collaboration; builds resilient communities and ecosystems; and supports a safe, professional wildfire workforce through responsible stewardship, operational excellence, science-based management, technology, all-hazard response, aviation integration, predictive analytics, continuous learning, and adaptation to evolving fire conditions.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service strives to lead with professionalism, advance capability through continuous improvement and consistently deliver the highest level of protection for people, landscapes and communities.

Core Values

GRIT — Courage + Grit 

We face fear and adversity with strength of character, physically, morally and ethically committed to service at every level. We pursue what matters with perseverance and passion, knowing that doing the hard thing is not the exception to who we are, it is the definition of who we are.

ACCOUNTABILITY — Respect + Accountability 

We ensure ownership of all actions, responsibilities and commitments at every level, holding ourselves and each other to the highest standard. We value others’ cultures, contributions, boundaries and rights with care because accountability and respect together define how we show up for one another and for every community we serve.

We lead with a coachable mindset, setting ego aside and putting the vision and team first. We acknowledge and seek to understand others’ perspectives, feelings and situations, knowing that the strength to listen is as important as the skill to act.

We are responsible caretakers of the organization, communities and ecosystems bound together by wildland fire. We invest in the intentional growth of ourselves and our organization because improving the team and protecting what we serve is always what we strive for.
