Horizon Scanning

Horizon scanning started as a tool for business leaders to identify emerging problems or challenges allowing proactive action. Invasive species biologists have adapted horizon scanning into a proactive tool for identifying high risk invasive species that is used to target bio-surveillance, inform policy development, and strengthen national biosecurity.

The National Invasive Species Council is coordinating extensive interagency efforts to strengthen invasive species horizon scanning for invasive species within the Federal Government. The work includes a multisectoral horizon scan review manuscript in preparation that provides guidance to managers on using horizon scan outputs to make more effective invasive species management decisions. Additionally, the team is developing resource compendia and data source inventory within the Federal Government to make conducting horizon scans easier and more efficient.
