EXPLORE Act Veteran Hiring Program

What is the EXPLORE Act?

The EXPLORE Act (Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences Act) is a comprehensive bipartisan law signed on January 4, 2025, to improve outdoor access and modernize recreation policies across Federal lands and waters.

What is the EXPLORE Act Veteran Hiring Program at Department of the Interior?

The EXPLORE Act also aims to reduce the Veteran unemployment rate by fostering employment opportunities for Veterans in Federal agencies related to the management of Federal recreational lands and waters.

A two-year hiring pilot program initiative was designed to bring Veterans into conservation and resource management careers at Department of the Interior through streamlined hiring authorities and targeted outreach.

What career opportunities are available?

The Department of the Interior has identified career opportunities for Veterans and transitioning Service Members (via SkillBridge internships). These positions are in demand across the Department of Interior’s many Bureaus and directly support the mission of the EXPLORE Act.

DOW SkillBridge connects service members with private and public sector organizations that offer internship opportunities for transitioning Service Members to build their resumes, explore employment interests, develop job skills, and gain valuable Federal government work experience that will help them prepare for their adjustment to the workplace.

Please visit the DOW SkillBridge Program site.

Disclaimer: SkillBridge participants are not entitled to a permanent job offer at the conclusion of the SkillBridge opportunity simply by virtue of completing the SkillBridge internship program. Veterans entitled to Veteran preference that meet the criteria for non-competitive hiring authorities and qualifications for the specific vacancy may be offered a non-competitive job opportunity upon completion of the internship.
