Federal Survey of Hawaiian Home Lands Project Precautions

The Department of the Interior’s Office of Native Hawaiian Relations (ONHR) and its Federal Survey of Hawaiian Home Lands projects' consultants are mindful of, and continue to monitor and respond to, the ever-changing situation regarding the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.  We are following Federal, State and local government requirements, restrictions, guidance, and protocols, including those directed by the State of Hawai‘i Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL).  The primary sources we are following for such information are listed below.

COVID-19 Protocol for Boundary Surveyors - When Field Survey Work Resumes

For the protection of the Hawaiian homestead and adjacent communities included in the projects' areas, as well as the projects' staff and the general public, we will follow the steps and protocols outlined below to avoid getting and transmitting COVID-19.

NO Project staff has –

  1. Been confirmed, or been in close contact with anyone confirmed, to have COVID-19;
  2. Traveled or returned to Hawai‘i from an area of widespread community transmission in the last twenty-one (21) days; or
  3. Been directed to self-isolate and monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for any part of the last fourteen (14) days.

ALL Project staff are to –

  1. Stay home if they are ill;
  2. Wash their hands frequently;
  3. Avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths;
  4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  5. Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19;
  6. Cover their coughs and sneezes appropriately (i.e., cover with crook of elbow);
  7. Carry hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes in their vehicles to clean and disinfect before and after contact or interactions with people;
  8. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces; and
  9. Engage in social distancing in and out of the workplace, including avoiding large gatherings and maintaining a distance of at least six (6) feet from others as much as possible.

Minimal In-Person Interactions and Social Distancing

These land survey projects do not require entry into any homes.  Consultants' field survey crews working in groups of not more than five (5), will minimize contact and engage in social distancing when visiting properties involved in the Project.  In-person interactions will be limited to notifying the residents, occupants or managers of their arrival and departure, as well as providing or receiving information.  As an example, no more than two (2) field survey crew members will approach a home’s door, and they, after knocking on the door, will step back at least six (6) feet in order to maintain such distance from the person answering the door.

We will update this information in response to additional and updated Federal, State, and local government requirements, restrictions, guidance, and protocols.
