WASHINGTON – U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Interior Michael Connor announced today that the Department has signed agreements with five additional tribal nations to implement the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations (Buy-Back Program), which facilitates the purchase of individual interests in fractionated trust lands and consolidates ownership for the tribe with jurisdiction. 

WASHINGTON – On the heels of a notification Monday from USDA to Congress of the need to transfer an additional $250 million to cover wildfire suppression costs for the remainder of the year, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, and the White House Office of Management and Budget Director Shaun Donovan sent a joint letter to Congress requesting they act to change the way the nation pays for wildfire costs.

The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (Commission) today approved more than $27 million in funding for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners to purchase, lease or otherwise conserve nearly 200,000 acres of wetland and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, shorebirds and other birds across the United States.

SHANKSVILLE, Pa.  – On Thursday, September 10, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will give remarks at the opening of the new Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center, honoring the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. 

Today, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell visited the Incident Command Post of the North Star Fire in Washington state, where she met with tribal leaders, toured the fire line and surrounding areas, and thanked firefighters and support personnel for their service.

As part of the Obama Administration’s Climate Data Initiative, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced a new set of online climate data resources to help Arctic communities with climate change planning, adaptation and management.

The Centennial celebration marks the National Park Service’s 100-year milestone with the goal of connecting with and creating the next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates.

Starting today, fourth graders nationwide can visit the new Every Kid in a Park website to obtain a pass that provides free access to students and their families to all federally managed lands and waters – including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and marine sanctuaries.
