Policy

The Department of the Interior is committed to responsibly integrating Artificial Intelligence across its mission areas to enhance public service. This commitment is guided by key federal directives, including Executive Order 14179, Executive Order 14277 and OMB Memorandum M-25-21. As AI continues to reshape public services, the Department is leveraging these technologies to improve stewardship of natural resources, streamline operations, support Tribal engagement, and strengthen energy and conservation efforts.

To support this vision, the Department has developed the following foundational documents:

• AI Strategy: Outlines the Department’s approach to integrating AI with a focus on transparency, accountability and public trust. It emphasizes using AI to generate insights, automate processes and optimize resource allocation for maximum public benefit and workforce support.
• AI Compliance Plan: Builds on the AI Strategy by detailing how the Department will ensure responsible AI use through meaningful human oversight, intervention capabilities and accountability, while enhancing decision-making and operational efficiency.
