2019 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release #28 Subdistricts 5-B and 5-C Commercial Fishing

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon Area

The 2019 fall chum salmon projection, based on inseason assessment, is a range of 750,000- 850,000 fish. Run sizes within this range are expected to provide for escapement, subsistence needs, and a limited commercial fishery. Adjusting for the overlap of summer chum salmon into the fall season, the fall chum salmon run is estimated to be 533,000 fish through August 19 which is near the historical median.

Subdistricts 5-B and 5-C Commercial Fishing Period:

Effective 6:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22, commercial fishing in Subdistricts 5-B and 5-C, will be open for one period until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 28. Fishermen may use fish wheels or set gillnets with a mesh size of 6 inches or smaller.

Commercial fishermen must confirm their market prior to commercial fishing. Processors, catcher sellers, or direct marketers are required to notify the department of their intent to operate by contacting the Fairbanks office at 459-7274.

This has been an announcement by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
