2018 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 55 - District 2 Commercial Period 19 and Subsistence Schedule

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon Area

The current cumulative passage of 122,800 coho salmon past the mainstem sonar as of September 2 is below the median of 139,000 fish, the projected total run size of 267,500 fish is above the median run size of 190,900 fish.

Based on inseason assessment, a limited surplus of coho salmon remains in addition to that harvested in the fall chum salmon directed commercial fishery. By regulation, effective Saturday, September 1, the coho salmon directed commercial fishing season is open in Districts 1 and 2 and management transitions to the Yukon River Coho Salmon Management Plan. By regulation, the coho salmon fishing season ends by September 10.

District 2 Commercial Fishing:

Commercial fishing will be open for one period in District 2, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 4. This will be a 6-hour commercial fishing period with gillnets restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh size. Commercial fishermen need to confirm their buyer prior to fishing. A reminder to fishermen that the Andreafsky River is closed to commercial fishing.

District 2 Subsistence Salmon Fishing Schedule:

Subsistence salmon fishing in District 2 is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with gillnets restricted to a maximum mesh size of 7.5 inches, except for closures before, during, and after commercial fishing periods. Subsistence salmon fishing will close at 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 4 and reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday, September 5. Fishermen may use 4-inch or smaller mesh size gillnets to target non-salmon species during subsistence salmon closures.
