DOINews: BOEM Postings Relay Latest Findings from Environmental Studies

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has added the latest quarterly findings from its national and regional environmental studies to its website. The studies, which BOEM posted between April 1 and June 30, 2014, highlight research used to inform decisions on the development of offshore energy and non-energy marine mineral resources. The research covers all four offshore regions on the Outer Continental Shelf – the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific, and Alaska.

Whether physical, biological or social sciences, the research, which is required by the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, is central to BOEM's mission.

Highlights from this quarter include reports on:

• Polar bear behavior and whaling activities;
• Air quality, water quality and ocean currents;
• Quieting technologies for reducing noise during seismic surveying and pile driving;
• Reducing environmental impacts from sand dredging offshore; and
• Electromagnetic fields from undersea power cables.
