Maintenance Assistance Program Grants for FY 2022 Now Open to Insular Areas

WASHINGTON – The United States (U.S.) Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) hereby announces that applications for fiscal year (FY) 2022 funding under the Maintenance Assistance Program (MAP) may now be submitted to Grants.Gov for funding consideration to support the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as the freely associated states – the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.

“The Maintenance Assistance Program is meant to encourage and support the development, improvement, and institutionalization of maintenance practices in the Insular Areas,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary Keone Nakoa. “We are especially interested in activities that will support maintenance training to extend the life of island infrastructure, ensure the safety of maintenance technicians, and/or increase the capacity of infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events.”

Maintenance Assistance Program funding is available for projects intended to develop insular institutions that improve the operation and maintenance of infrastructure in the island areas. MAP funds may also be used on occasion for limited repairs, including climate change related repairs and repairs needed to prevent future damage. Applications will be considered from insular government entities, educational institutions, or non-profit organizations whose grant proposals directly benefit the four U.S. territories or three freely associated states, in accordance with 2 CFR 200.

The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2022, however, it is highly recommended that applications be submitted as early as possible. Applications will be reviewed beginning May 2022 once OIA receives full-year appropriations. Applications related to public safety and emergencies will be reviewed in a timely manner, prior to the April deadline.
