2017 Yukon River Summer Salmon Fishery News Release #2: Yukon River Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Yukon Area

Based on preseason projections, the 2017 Chinook salmon run on the Yukon River is anticipated to be early and similar run size to last year. The first subsistence-caught Chinook salmon was reported on May 26.

This news release puts Districts 1-3 on the subsistence salmon fishing schedule, and restricts the mesh size to 6 inches or smaller. These actions are taken in order to limit the harvest of early Chinook salmon that are arriving prior to the first pulse. During subsistence salmon fishing closures, gillnets with 4-inch or smaller mesh of 60 feet or shorter length may be used for non-salmon species.

When the first pulse of Chinook salmon is detected in the Lower Yukon Test Fishery, news releases will go out announcing that fishing will close and then reopen with selective gear types in each section of the river as Chinook salmon migrate upstream. The department would like to extend gratitude to the subsistence fishermen who have shared harvest information. These reports are instrumental in directing management actions.
