U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (HHS)

Certain invasive species impact human health directly. Although NISC does not address pathogens and parasites that infect humans exclusively, NISC does coordinate actions on animal diseases and zoonotic diseases, that are diseases that are transmitted between human and animals. Several agencies within HHS deal with zoonotic diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) address zoonotic disease, emerging diseases and those with unknown etiologies. Specifically, CDC's National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases (NCVED) provides leadership, expertise, and service concerning epidemiological science, bioterrorism preparedness, applied research, disease surveillance, and outbreak response for infectious diseases. The National Institute of Health provides support for zoonotic and bioterrorism preparedness research. Public Health Service is one of seven uniformed services who's officers serve in the NISC agencies such as National Park Service, NOAA, USDA, EPA, and Department of Defense. Their work includes zoonotic disease surveillance and prevention.
