U.S. Department of Commerce

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE (DOC) The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a bureau within the Department of Commerce, is to understand and predict changes in Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our Nation's economic, social, and environmental needs. Legal mandates charge NOAA to protect, restore, and manage the use of ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes resources to reduce environmental and economic impacts resulting from invasions from aquatic organisms.

NOAA focuses on the prevention, monitoring, control, education and research to prevent introduction and dispersal of aquatic invasive species and provides leadership in the coordination of federal invasive species efforts. NOAA serves as the co-Chair with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of the Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force (ANSTF), an intergovernmental organization. The ANSTF is dedicated to preventing and controlling aquatic nuisance species, and implementing the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act (NANPCA) of 1990.
