Federal Subsistence Board to hold teleconference on Wildlife Temporary Special Action Requests WSA19-03 (Unit 13 moose and caribou), WSA19-05 (Unimak Island caribou), and WSA19-06 (Unit 20E, 25C, and 20F caribou)

The Federal Subsistence Board (Board) will hold a teleconference on July 19, 2019, to take action on Temporary Wildlife Special Action Requests WSA19-03, WSA19-05, and WSA19-06. The teleconference will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. or until the Board completes its work.

Temporary Special Action Request WSA19-03, submitted by Paul Rude, requests that the Board close Federal public lands in Unit 13 to the harvest of caribou and moose except by Federally qualified subsistence users for the 2019–2020 season. A public hearing to solicit testimony on WSA19-03 was conducted on June 3, 2019 in Copper Center, and Tribal and Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Corporation consultations were held on May 29, 2019 in Anchorage via teleconference.

Temporary Special Action Request WSA19-05, submitted by the Kodiak/Aleutians Subsistence Regional Advisory Council, requests that the Board open Federal public lands in Unit 10, Unimak Island only, for a limited bull caribou hunt (up to 10 permits) from August 15–October 15, 2019, for the residents of False Pass only. A public hearing to solicit testimony on WSA19-05 was conducted on June 5, 2019 via teleconference, and Tribal and ANCSA Corporation consultations were held on May 30, 2019 in Anchorage via teleconference.

Temporary Special Action Request WSA19-06, submitted by the Bureau of Land Management, Eastern Interior Field Office, requests that the Board change the harvest limit for caribou in Units 20E, 20F, and 25C to up to two caribou, change the winter season to October 21–March 31, and provide delegated authority to the Federal manager to set sex restrictions in all three units. The proponent also requests additional delegated authority to modify harvest limits and season dates in Unit 20F. The Federal manager currently has this authority in Units 20E and 25C. A public hearing to solicit testimony on WSA19-06 was conducted on June 13, 2019 in Fairbanks, and Tribal and ANCSA consultations were held on June 12, 2019 in Anchorage via teleconference.
