2019 Yukon River Salmon Fishery News Release #13 District 4 Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon Area

So far, the 2019 Chinook run appears similar to the 2018 Chinook run size. Similar to 2018, harvest on Chinook runs of this size needs to be restricted in order to meet escapement goals and harvest share objectives. Like last year, fishing is reduced to half the regulatory (windows) fishing schedule, gillnets are being restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh, and one fishing period per week is being cancelled, as needed, to allow fish to pass upriver.

The 2019 summer chum salmon run is very late and likely weak. Therefore, there is currently less overlap of the summer chum and Chinook salmon runs in middle and upper river districts.

Subsistence Management Actions

District 4-A (Anvik, Grayling, Kaltag, Nulato, Koyukuk): Subsistence fishing is currently closed and will open with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets for two 24-hour periods:

  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26
  • The Saturday, June 29 period is being cancelled,
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 3

Subdistricts 4-B and 4-C (Galena, Ruby): Subsistence fishing is currently closed and will open with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets for two 24-hour periods:

Both set and drift gillnets are allowed in District 4, as well as dip nets and fish wheels. During subsistence salmon fishing closures, fishing for non-salmon species is allowed. However, gillnet mesh must be 4-inch or smaller.

Koyukuk River: Subsistence salmon fishing in the Koyukuk River will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week with 7.5 inch or smaller mesh gillnets.
