2018 Yukon River Summer Salmon Fishery News Release # 47 - Subdistrict 4-A Commercial Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon Area

At this time, the majority of the Chinook salmon run has passed through Subdistrict 4-A, so the requirement to man commercial fish wheels is being removed because very few Chinook salmon would be encountered at this late date. Commercial fishing will remain open in Subdistrict 4-A to target summer chum salmon. These commercial fishing periods do not affect current subsistence management actions and fishing schedules.

Subdistrict 4-A (from ¾ miles downstream of Old Paradise Village upstream to Cone Point):

Effective 9 a.m. Saturday, July 21, commercial fish wheels do not need to be manned. Commercial fishing will remain open for 24-hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.

As a reminder, waste of salmon is illegal. Salmon caught in commercial wheels may be sold or the majority of the carcass must be salvaged for use by humans or domesticated animals. Disposal of male chum carcasses into the river is illegal. The buyer has committed to purchasing male chum salmon. Chinook salmon may not be sold.

Fishermen may release Chinook salmon immediately alive or retain them for personal use. All salmon harvested during commercial fishing must be recorded on a fish ticket at the time of sale. Salmon kept for personal use will be recorded on the fish ticket as “not sold.” Any salmon that have been released alive should be recorded on the fish ticket as “released alive”.

This is an announcement by the ADF&G in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. To reach the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Emmonak call 949-1798.
