Description
Join Sarah A. Leavitt, Ph.D., Curator, National Building Museum as we explore the history and future of St. Elizabeths, formerly known as the Government Hospital for the Insane. Established by the Department of the Interior in 1852 under Secretary Stuart, the hospital went on to serve almost 8,000 patients at its height a century later. Today, with most patients gone, the site is in the process of new development, from the Department of Homeland Security to a new entertainment venue and residential neighborhood. The exhibition explored here looks at the history of the architectural response to mental health care as well as the changes in land use at this historic campus.
