On Oct. 3, Ranger Reggie Murray was presented with the inaugural Flat Hat Award on behalf of the National Parks Travelers Club. The award was given in recognition of his exemplary work at Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Murray has been with the National Park Service for 18 years as an interpretive park ranger. He currently works at William Howard Taft National Historic Site in Cincinnati,Ohio, and provides interpretation support for Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument.

Murray also takes part in living history interpretation as a soldier of the 9th and 10th Cavalry units of the Buffalo Soldiers in the post-Civil War era. His interpretation of the site helps visitors gain insight into Col. Charles Young's character as a man.

The Flat Hat Award honors one National Park Service ranger each year who has gone above and beyond the normal call of duty to assist the club or its members by enhancing their visits to a park.

Member-submitted nominations are evaluated by a three-member panel, and the winner is announced at the group's annual meeting. Members of the National Parks Travelers Club share the common goal of visiting every site in the National Park System; a few members of the group have achieved this goal by visiting all 401 sites.
