Office of the Director

The AVSO Director provides overall leadership to the office and serves as the primary point of contact with the Office of Policy, Management and Budget (PMB) within the Office of the Secretary. The Director is the spokesperson for the organization and is required by Department policy to be a Certified General Appraiser and hold a qualifying professional appraisal designation.

The Director carries the ultimate management responsibility for AVSO. In this capacity, the Director’s guidance and leadership fulfill the following duties:  

  • Develops the organizational mission of AVSO.
  • Carries the responsibility for managing and enhancing the overall performance of the organization.
  • Establishes the framework for budget and finance matters in AVSO.
  • Interprets and administers the Department of the Interior regulatory matters pertaining to the operations of AVSO.
  • Assigns personnel to top leadership positions, evaluates their performance, and authorizes plans and commitments.
  • Ensures that the divisions are functioning properly by setting requirements for them and supporting them.
  • Provides direction pertaining to the vision of the organization and translation of the vision into policy.
