Secretary Kempthorne to Speak at
Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission Meeting

Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2007, will give remarks at the meeting of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission was established by Congress and charged with planning educational, public, and legacy events to mark Lincoln's 200th birthday in 2009. Its members, who are appointed by the president and congressional leaders, include political leaders, jurists, historians, and collectors.

Earlier this year, the Commission and the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service signed a memorandum of agreement to ensure cooperation during the bicentennial period of 2008-2010. Several National Park Service sites will take part in the bicentennial celebrations, including Lincoln Birthplace (KY), Lincoln Boyhood Home (IN), Lincoln Home in Springfield (IL), Lincoln Memorial (DC), Ford’s Theatre (DC), and Gettysburg National Military Park (PA).
