Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs Carl J. Artman
to Deliver Keynote Address at the National Native American Economic Policy Summit

WASHINGTON – Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs Carl J. Artman will deliver a keynote address at the National Native American Economic Policy Summit on the need for tribes to develop commercial codes and enforceable contracts to encourage confidence in outside investors on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. The Summit being held in Phoenix, AZ, brings together stakeholders to discuss economic policies that affect tribes, individuals and others in their attempt to become self-sufficient.

“At this Summit, we are discussing the role of equity markets, federally guaranteed loan programs, and alternative sources of finance in jumpstarting and sustaining Indian owned businesses,” said Carl J. Artman. “We are talking about the importance of a strong culturally-based institutional environment, with enforceable contract and property rights, in encouraging the confidence of outside investors.
