Secretary Norton Helps Kick Off Get Fit With US Outdoor Recreation Campaign


(WASHINGTON) Secretary Of The Interior Gale Norton will help kick off a Get Fit With US campaign in St. Paul, Minn. tomorrow, June 5, to encourage Americans to use public lands and waters as inexpensive, fun ways to have physically active lifestyles that can lead to healthier, happier and longer lives.

The event on Harriett Island Regional Park will feature remarks from federal, state and local leaders, including Sen. Norm Coleman (Minnesota); Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly. Norton will deliver her remarks during the 10 to 11 a.m. kickoff program. A media availability will follow the program at 11 a.m. Norton will also join A Family Fun Walk to help emphasize the value of outdoor recreational activity.

Harriett Island is part of the Mississippi National River Recreation Area. The Get Fit With US campaign emphasizes the link between public lands and public health as part of the President's Healthier US Initiative to improve the nation's fitness. The federal government, the states, local jurisdictions and private groups are working together under this initiative in partnerships that encourage the use of inexpensive outdoor recreation. The event is sponsored and hosted by the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association, the City of St. Paul Division of Park and Recreation, the Outdoor Industry Foundation, and General Mills.
