WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, May 12, 2008, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will deliver the keynote address at the Department's Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony that will honor Interior officers who have died in the line of duty. The Secretary will also lead a wreath laying as part of the ceremony in remembrance of the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to the nation.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will be held at the Sidney R. Yates Auditorium of the Main Interior Building in Washington, D.C. Secretary Kempthorne will be joined by Larry R. Parkinson, Interior’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Law Enforcement, Security and Emergency Management.
The Department has more than 4,000 sworn law enforcement officers who protect the public and Interior employees as part of the National Park Service, U.S. Park Police, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Reclamation. In the 159-year history of the Department, 96 law officers have died while protecting the people and communities they serve.
