Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will be the main speaker for the graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pa., this weekend. On Friday evening, he will address approximately 150 students receiving graduate degrees. On Saturday, he will address a crowd including approximately 1,000 undergraduates plus faculty, family and friends.
Kempthorne took the oath of office as the 49th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior on May 26, 2006. Before his confirmation as Secretary, Kempthorne served nearly two terms as Governor of Idaho, elected first in 1998 and reelected in 2002.
From 1993-1999, he completed a successful six-year term representing Idaho in the United States Senate.
Located in historic Cumberland County, the university is near Gettysburg National Military Park, a unit of the National Park System, which is part of the Department of the Interior.
