WASHINGTON, D.C. – Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett will unveil new Cooperative Conservation legislation during a media teleconference at 11:30 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. The “Cooperative Conservation Enhancement Act” develops and expands the use of intergovernmental and public – private partnerships in efforts to conserve and protect the country’s natural resources and environment. In particular, the legislation allows for various federal agencies to work in closer cooperation and generates improved opportunities for funding of non-governmental partnerships on conservation projects.
The legislation was developed as a result of the White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation and multiple listening sessions held across the country, during which people from all walks of life voiced their concerns and opinions about the overly complex, and in many cases stifling, processes that hinder large-scale conservation efforts.
Deputy Secretary Scarlett will discuss the legislation and take questions from the media on the call.
