Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will join children from across Santa Monica to celebrate National Junior Ranger Day at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2007.
Secretary Kempthorne and the children will hike, listen to traditional Chumash storytelling, and make their own Abalone Shell Necklace to earn their Junior Ranger badges. Following the hike, Secretary Kempthore will swear in the children as full Junior Rangers.
The Secretary will be available to answer questions during the day’s activities.
The Secretary’s visit comes as part of National Park Week, an annual, Presidentially proclaimed week for celebration and recognition of the country’s 391 National Parks. Parks across the country will be hosting events throughout the week from hikes, to picnics, to family and kids days, culminating in National Junior Ranger Day.
