Researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark found that growing up near vegetation is associated with an up to 55 percent lower risk of mental health disorders in adulthood. Kristine Engemann, the biologist who led the study, combined decades of satellite imagery with extensive health and demographic data of the Danish population to investigate the mental health effects of growing up near greenery.

Veterans make up 5.9% of the American working age population. But in the National Park Service, veterans make up 26% of the workforce. Laws that give preference to veterans in the hiring process make it easier for them to land jobs in government agencies and historically the National Park Service has attracted and retained veterans.

The USGS has a new book! In it, they point out the many facets of research carried out by USGS STEM scientists in an effort to show career options and pathways not typically pursued by women. Those portrayed were selected by USGS associate and regional directors as representative of particular fields and to inspire future generations.
