Before the 1960s almost everything about living openly as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) person was illegal. New York City laws against homosexual activities were particularly harsh. The Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969 is a milestone in the quest for LGBT civil rights and provided momentum for a movement.

The Park spreads across three islands, 9,500 acres of tropical rainforest, and 4,000 acres of ocean, including coral reefs. While remote, the islands of American Samoa, true to the meaning of the word Samoa (Islands of Sacred Earth), are welcoming and offer beautiful landscapes and centuries of culture and history.

Secretary Salazar, Director Jarvis to Discuss Economic Impacts of National Parks

WASHINGTON – On Monday, February 25, 2013, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis will hold a news media teleconference to unveil the annual report on the significant economic contributions of national parks to local, regional and state economies; their importance to the tourism industry, community businesses and park vendors; and the expected impact of budget cuts under a March 1 sequestration.
The National Park Service operates 398 national parks, historic sites, monuments and memorials, parkways, trails, preserves and reserves, seashores and lakeshores, recreation areas and national battlefields across the country.
