On Monday, May 14, 2007 Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will lead a memorial service at the Department of the Interior, honoring Interior law officers killed in the line of duty. On the following day, Tuesday, May 15, 2007 he will participate in a national memorial ceremony honoring police officers from around the nation who were killed in the line of duty in 2006.
Kempthorne will be the keynote speaker at Monday’s ceremony of remembrance honoring the 96 Interior law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The 2:00 p.m. memorial service is held each year in Washington, D.C. during National Police Week. Those who will be remembered range from Captain Chin Chi Kee, a Bureau of Indian Affairs employee who was killed in 1852 while attempting to arrest four whiskey smugglers, to refuge manager Rich Guadagno, who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001 aboard United Flight 93 with other passengers battling terrorists to prevent the plane from reaching the nation’s capital.
On Tuesday, Kempthorne will join other cabinet members and congressional leaders in a national memorial ceremony honoring police officers from all federal, state and local agencies who were killed in the line of duty in 2006. The 26th Annual National Police Officers Memorial Service will be on the West Lawn of the Capitol, starting at 12 noon.
